As photographers, we spend so much time planning, scouting locations, checking the weather, researching timelines, and envisioning how the light will fall. And while preparation is absolutely part of our craft, there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years: you can never truly plan for the perfect sunset.

Sunsets have a way of humbling us. You can check the forecast, but no app will predict the exact blend of colors that show up in the sky. Sometimes it’s muted pastels, soft and quiet. Other times, the sky explodes in fiery pinks, oranges, and purples that make everyone stop in their tracks. And occasionally (let’s be honest) the clouds roll in, and the sun just…disappears.

But here’s the beauty in it: unpredictability is what makes sunsets so magical. If we could schedule them, they would lose their wonder. The best sunsets are gifts, unexpected moments that happen when the atmosphere, light, and timing all line up in a way that can’t be replicated.

As a photographer, my job is to be ready when those moments arrive. I can’t control the sky, but I can control my preparation. I bring my clients to a beautiful spot, guide them into natural, authentic moments, and make sure we’re in position if the sky decides to put on a show. And when it does, it feels like we’re all in on a secret together. Like the universe gave us something special to remember.

So no, you can’t plan the perfect sunset. But you can show up, stay present, and be ready for the magic when it happens. And honestly? That’s where the best photographs come from not from perfection, but from surprise, connection, and the beauty of the unexpected.
