There’s something about Playa Maderas at sunset that feels almost unreal. Like the ocean and sky are quietly collaborating on a masterpiece just before the day closes. When I planned a beach photoshoot there with pro surfer Aina Crilly, I knew the setting would be beautiful, but I didn’t realize just how perfectly everything would align: the light, the waves, the energy, and the effortless presence she brings both on and off the board.

A romantic proposal scene set between rows of grapevines in a scenic vineyard with white flowers and a blanket.

We started shooting just as the sun began its slow descent. The beach was glowing in warm gold tones, the kind of light photographers dream about because it softens everything it touches. Aina walked down the shoreline with her board tucked under her arm, completely at home in the environment that shaped her career. There was no need for heavy direction. She moved naturally, letting the rhythm of the tide guide her poses.

One of the most striking things about photographing a professional surfer is how connected they are to the ocean. Every frame felt alive. Whether she was standing ankle deep in the water, watching a set roll in, or silhouetted against the horizon, there was a quiet confidence in her posture that translated beautifully through the lens. The wind caught her hair at just the right moments, and the reflection of the sky shimmered across the wet sand like a mirror.

As the sun dipped lower, the colors shifted from gold to amber to soft rose. That’s when the magic really happened. Sunset shoots move fast. You have maybe 5 minutes of perfect light and it becomes a creative dance between photographer and subject. We moved quickly along the shore, capturing action shots, still portraits, and candid in-between moments. Some of my favorite images were the ones where she laughed between takes, surfboard balanced casually beside her, completely unposed.

By the time the sun slipped below the horizon, the sky was painted in deep oranges and purples, and the beach had that calm hush that comes right after dusk. We wrapped the session sandy, salty, and smiling, knowing we’d captured something special.

Photographing at Playa Maderas is always inspiring, but working with someone who truly embodies the spirit of the ocean takes it to another level. This shoot wasn’t just about surf photography or sunset portraits. It was about documenting a moment where light, landscape, and athlete came together in perfect harmony.
