Simple Tips for Beautiful, Stress-Free Photos
Planning a family photo session is exciting but let’s be honest, it can also feel a little overwhelming. What should we wear? What if the kids don’t cooperate? Where should we go? As a family photographer, I get these questions all the time and I’m here to help make the process fun, relaxed, and totally stress free. Whether it’s your first session or your fifth, here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your family session and make the most of our time together.
1. Choose the Right Time of Day
The best lighting for photos is usually just after sunrise or about an hour before sunset, what we call “golden hour.” It’s soft, flattering, and creates that warm, dreamy glow. I’ll work with you to schedule your session around this time, but if your little ones have an early bedtime, we’ll find a time that works best for your family.
2. What to Wear (and What Not to Stress About)
Outfits don’t need to match perfectly, in fact, coordinating rather than matching looks best. Think soft, neutral tones or a mix of textures and earthy colors that complement each other. Avoid large logos or busy patterns, and choose clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in.
Pro tip: Lay everything out the day before to make sure everyone’s outfits work together. I’m always happy to help with outfit ideas just shoot me a message!

3. Prep the Kids (and Yourselves!)
Let the kids know we’re going on a little adventure, not a stiff photo shoot. There’s no pressure to “smile perfectly." I’ll guide you through natural prompts that feel more like play and connection than posing. The best photos come when everyone feels relaxed and themselves. Bring along a favorite snack, small toy, or something comforting if it helps your child feel more at ease.
4. Plan for Some Wiggle Room
Things don’t have to go perfectly for the session to be perfect. If the kids need a break, we’ll take one. If there’s a little chaos, that’s okay too. It often leads to the most genuine, joy filled moments. Trust the process and let go of the pressure. My goal is to capture the love and connection that already exists in your family.
5. Location, Location
Whether it’s the beach, a local field, your backyard, or a favorite park, I’ll help you choose a location that feels right for your family. It should reflect your vibe: natural, relaxed, and beautiful.

6. Relax and Enjoy
The best family sessions feel more like a hangout than a photoshoot. Laugh, cuddle, play, explore. Let the moments unfold naturally. My job is to document your story just as it is right now, in all its realness and love.
Bonus Tip: Trust Your Photographer
You’ve hired a professional for a reason. So once you show up, let go of the planning and trust that I’ve got you. I’ll guide you every step of the way and make sure we capture images you’ll treasure forever.
