Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a truly unique session. One that was both visually striking and filled with personality. It was a “Death to My 20s” shoot, and yes, we did it at a cemetery.
Now before you raise an eyebrow, let’s clear something up: photographing in cemeteries is not against the law. However, I always approach locations like this with a deep sense of respect and awareness. While some may find the idea unconventional or even a little controversial, there’s a difference between celebrating a personal milestone and being disrespectful and we made sure to stay on the right side of that line.
- The session itself was moody, empowering, and symbolic. Turning 30 is a big moment, and this concept leaned into it with full drama: black attire and a confident energy that said goodbye to the past and welcomed a new chapter. The cemetery setting added a layer of meaning that no studio or standard backdrop ever could.
That said, not all cemeteries are open to this kind of use, and some may have restrictions or require permission. If you're considering something similar, I always recommend scouting in advance and being mindful of visitors and the history of the space.
This shoot was a reminder that photography isn’t just about capturing a pretty picture. It’s about telling a story, expressing a feeling, and sometimes, pushing the boundaries of tradition.
