As a wedding and event photographer, I consider it a true honor to be invited into some of life’s most intimate and meaningful moments. From the first look to the final dance, I get a front row seat to love, joy, and celebration and I never take that for granted. But lately, I’ve felt compelled to speak honestly about something many photographers (and other vendors) quietly deal with: disrespectful or disruptive guest behavior at events.
While most guests are kind, supportive, and respectful, there’s been a noticeable uptick in situations that make it difficult for us to do our jobs well and ultimately, that affects the couple’s final gallery.
What’s Been Happening
I’ve experienced everything from guests stepping in front of me during key moments, to being spoken to rudely or dismissed when trying to do something as simple as gather family members for portraits. Some guests treat vendors as an afterthought, forgetting that we’re not just “the help,” but artists and professionals who were hired with love and intention by the couple.
- Whether it’s someone refusing to move during the ceremony, being hostile during portraits, or creating a toxic atmosphere for those working hard behind the scenes, these moments matter.
Why It Matters
At the end of the day, my goal is to deliver the best possible images to my clients — to freeze moments they’ll treasure forever. But when I’m being disrespected or blocked from doing my job, it doesn't just impact me. It impacts the couple’s experience and memories.
- Photography is collaborative. It works best when there’s mutual respect between guests, vendors, and the couple. A moment missed because someone insisted on standing in the aisle with their iPhone or shouted over the photographer during group shots is a moment we can’t get back.
A Gentle Ask
If you’re planning a wedding or attending one, I encourage you to keep in mind the energy and attitude you bring into the space. Remember that everyone working at your event is there to make the day beautiful, seamless, and memorable. A little kindness, patience, and cooperation go a long way.
