Cancun, Mexico

Let us first start off by explaining why we haven't posted one of these blogs in a while (you have all been clamoring for more, we know). We got married!!!!! No, not to each other as you might have assumed, but to actual real boys! Stephanie married that tall drink of water from Mexico, and Amy met her match with a talented singer, and equally silly fool from Canada. What can we say, we got a thing for foreigners. It's been a crazy 2 years, weddings, honeymoons, immigration (don't get us started), and a bunch of life adjustments. Well the dust has settled, and the two traveling fools are at it again, this time, with the hubbies in tow. Going forward, you may see blog posts from each of us individually, since we can't just go traipsing around the globe just the two of us anymore. But don't worry, we'll still be out there somewhere, just not always together. But let's get this started off right with a couples trip back to Mexico for the first time as married ladies. It all started because dental services in the US are expensive, for two business owning fools. Wanna save yourself $50 bucks on a teeth cleaning? Go to Mexico, duh!

Apparently you can have a pretty severely pulled muscle to the point where you can’t walk, sit, lay…anything. But the second that captain comes on that intercom and announces that we are starting our descent into Cancun, your pain magically disappears. Same goes for your cracked lip. Your body just heals itself when you are in Mexican territory. This would be true of Alfonso, who has rightfully been struggling with the cold here in New York.

If you are going to plan a trip revolving around going to the dentist (because the American Healthcare System is so great), you might want to make sure that the days you are going work well with the dentist schedule. Or else you will be forced to go right from the airport and you will literally be running to make your appointment in time. And of course it would be the first time in three years that Stephanie’s has ever seen immigration so packed. But luckily we got through right in time (we were exactly three minutes late to our appointment). If you want to grease the palm of a transportations guy, you might get bumped up the line and get in a van before anyone else does.

Please double check your Airbnb information. No matter how many times we’ve used Airbnb, we have never had this happen. The address that is provided on the app is not the actual address that is provided on Airbnb…of course. They choose to give you that information in a message. You’ll get dropped off at the wrong place, you’ll have to call the dentist (who has graciously arranged free transportation to the clinic) to let them know that you are not there, you are somewhere else. And then when you finally get into the transportation and finally to the dentist office, you are so pleasantly pleased to walk into some high end manhattan type doctor's office. There are plush white sofas so clean that you can eat off of, beautiful modern light fixtures, artwork…luxury. They had the nicest employees who were willing to wait for us past their closing time. And not to mention, spoke better English than most Americans. They had three dentists waiting for us. We can’t rave about this clinic enough, so please, for the love of God, treat yourself to a cleaning at Sani Dental.  They have clinics in Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.  They will arrange airport transfers to and from your hotel for far cheaper than anywhere else, and they have free transportation from your accommodation to the clinic.  The service is 10/10, not just for the dental visit itself, but for everything else surrounding it.  Once it’s all said and done, you finish your appointment, and now it is time to enter rat mode.

First stop…7-11 and Oxxo to stock up on beer, liquor and the famous “ruffles and le crema.” With your snack in tow, you go to your Airbnb and you start slamming. This was a different type of trip where we didn’t really have much planned besides going to the dentist. It was all about going back to Mexico for the first time after the grueling headache of going through immigration for the husbands and letting Thomas explore the love that we have for Mexico. We spent the first night on “The Fifth” (Fifth Avenue, the most charming pedestrian street lined with restaurants, shops, bars, and tattoo shops), our most favorite location in Playa Del Carmen. Thomas got a tattoo, because he had to join the drunken tattoo in Mexico club like the rest of us. A recommended experience: get a tattoo in Mexico because you can bring your alcoholic beverage and if your waiter is cool enough, he will even let you take your actual glass with your actual Margarita into the tattoo shop. Just don’t be an asshole and be sure to return your glass back to the restaurant.

We got lucky with having cooler weather, so Stephanie did not complain about all the walking (as much). After a successful drunk night (of course boys will be boys: they can never just let the party end), the boys decided to go out on their own to meet up with some of Alfono’s friends and have some more drinks. While Stephanie and Amy got into a good ol fashion yap session on the Airbnb balcony…typical.

The next morning, we challenged ourselves to get up early to do a classic couples photoshoot at the beach during the sunrise. After the sunrise, we earned ourselves breakfast at La Vagabunda, the absolute very best place for breakfast on the Fifth. Alfonso was sure to let the waiter know that Stephanie is happy as long as she has a plate full of cherries, a basket full of toast, and mimosas. Afterwards, we went up to the pool even though it was a bit windy and cold. Regardless of the fact that Stephanie and Amy had a full yap session about how you can still get burnt even though there are clouds…the two assholes still got burnt. The pool was awesome and if you’re lucky, you’ll get the most amazing view (see below).

A bare foot next to a gray chair leg on a light colored floor.

Because the pool was thirty degrees fahrenheit, we did not get to play mermaids yet. If you needed to know, three out of the four of us threw up. Thomas threw up in Stephanie’s drink, Amy pulled the trigger in the pool bathroom, and Stephanie threw up in the middle of the night (can or can not be confirmed whether or not it was due to alcohol…we don’t know).

Stephanie and Alfonso woke up the next morning to handle some official business. If we told you, we would have to kill you. This is when the first real mishap happens during the trip. Alfonso leaves his phone in the cab. This is not quite like an Uber in the States. You can’t just report that your phone is missing and most likely get it back. This is a cab in Mexico where chances are, if you leave your phone, it is lost forever. Luckily, Alfonso being a local, he contacted the cab driver and was able to get the phone back. But it did cost a finders fee. We get back and we decide to go to the local side of town where Alfonso lived while he was dating Stephanie. Back to our home sweet home; our little purple rooms that we missed so much. We treated Thomas to his first collectivo ride which is a communal van stopping at certain corners in town. Kind of the same system as a town bus but in a van. This is when the second mishap happens. Thomas gets off the collectivo and immediately can’t find his phone. We were able to flag down the collectivo, but fun fact, it was on him the whole time. He was so excited that his bf Chad called that he forgot that he put his phone in his shirt pocket. We got to eat locally and stopped at a few different places for a few different local authentic foods. This is what we have been dreaming of since the start of this whole immigration process. We got our empanadas, we went to the apartment to creeply look through the gate and reminisce of all the time spent there. We made our way back for some real mermaid time. This time we lathered up in sunblock. We were forced to finish the ridiculous amount of beers that the boys bought, but somehow needed more. Thomas loses his phone…again. But again, we found it. That night we ordered more local Mexican food while Alfonso got to be Alfosno and walked around on his own taking in every last moment being back home.

All in all, we travel well together!  As per usual, we are kind of “experts” in traveling to one specific tiny town in Mexico, so if you’re heading South of the Border, reach out!  We love to yap about our travels!
